Gunmen shoot dead four Russian police officers in Dagestan
Four police officers have been killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire on them in a remote village in Russia's volatile North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan.
According to a statement released by Dagestans Interior Ministry on Sunday, the attack took place in the village of Burshi, some 100 kilometers (62 miles) south-west of regional capital Makhachkala.

Russia has been fighting militants since the mid 1990s in its North Caucasus region, where the Republics of Chechnya, Dagestan, and Ingushetia have been the scene of sporadic attacks and militant clashes.

On May 1, three people were killed and two others injured after unidentified assailants pelted a police car with bullets in the city of Buinaksk, 48 kilometers southwest of Makhachkala.

On May 25, one police officer was killed and 14 others injured after a bomb explosion occurred near the headquarters of Dagestans Interior Ministry in Makhachkala.

In September 2012, a Russian police officer lost his life and two others were wounded after gunmen attacked their patrol car in Dagestans Khasavyurt district, situated 1,531 kilometers (951 miles) southeast of Moscow.

Violence first broke out in Chechnya in 1994, when 250,000 people were forced to flee to neighboring territories because of a war between Chechen separatists and the Russian army.

After a short-lived period of relative peace from 1996 to 1999, the war resumed following attacks blamed on Chechen militant groups.

An estimated 100,000 people have been killed and thousands more displaced in the conflict.

Widespread unemployment, especially among young adults, is a major problem that has been attributed to an increased recruitment of people by separatist militants.
