Iran basketball team defeats US in William Jones Cup

The Iranian national mens basketball team has recorded another impressive victory at the William Jones Cup in Taiwan, and defeated the United States.
The Iranian sportsmen earned their sixth straight victory in the competitions on Friday, and overcame their American rivals 86-62.

Towering Hamed Haddadi scored 25 points for Iran to stand on top of the score sheet. Iran's sharpshooter Hamed Afagh added 17 points of his own.

Curtis Marshall and Eric Hicks led the US side with 19 and 12 points respectively.

On Thursday, the Iranian team defeated Japan 60-55 in an awe-inspiring match.

The Iranians had defeated Jordan, Taiwan B, Egypt and South Korea in their earlier contests.

The Iranian national basketball squad will play against Taiwan A on Saturday, and Lebanon on Sunday.

The 35th edition of the R. William Jones Cup began in New Taipei City on July 6 and will run until July 14.

Teams from across Asia, Africa and North America are competing in the round-robin basketball tournament to decide international supremacy.

Most of the teams involved are Asian, but the United States has sent a representative team as well.

The R. William Jones Cup (also known as the Jones Cup) has been held annually in Taiwan since 1977. It was named after basketball promoter and one of the founders of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), Renato William Jones.
