An Iraqi policeman, on the ground at left, was wounded by a terrorist attack in central Baghdad.[/caption]Gunmen have killed 14 security troopers on the first day of the holy fasting month of Ramadan in western Iraq, an Iraqi official says.
The attack took place at sundown Wednesday after armed men launched an assault on an army checkpoint near the Barwana town in the western province of Anbar, Barwana Mayor Meyasser Abdul-Mohsin said on Thursday.
Three of the dead were standing guard at the checkpoint and 11 others were breaking their fast in a trailer, Abdul-Mohsin said.
Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk during the holy month of Ramadan.
No group has claimed responsibility for the deadly incident.
On Monday, six people were killed in the city of Madain, south of Baghdad, after a bomb exploded near a football field inside a sports club.
Gunmen also opened fire on the family of a policeman killing the officer along with his wife, parents and two young children, who were returning from a wedding in the town of Musayyib.
There has been recently an upsurge in violence across Iraq whose authorities say Qatar and Saudi Arabia have had a hand in some of the deadly incidents.
The United Nations says a total of 1,045 people were killed and nearly 2,400 were injured in violent incidents across Iraq in May while a total of 761 Iraqis lost their lives and 1,771 others were wounded in terrorist attacks across the country in June.
