Cleric denies terrorism charges in Jordan

Cleric denies terrorism charges in Jordan
Cleric Abu Qatada has pleaded not guilty after terrorism charges were brought against him by the countrys military prosecutors.
According to a statement by the clerics lawyer Taysir Diab, Abu Qatada denied the charges on Sunday just hours after he was deported from Britain.

"I will appeal tomorrow (Monday) to the (state security) court to release him on bail," the lawyer added.

Abu Qatada was charged with conspiracy to carry out terrorist acts at a court near the Marka military airfield, located east of Amman.

"He was remanded in judicial custody for 15 days in the Muwaqqar prison," a Jordanian judicial official said.

The cleric was deported from Britain on Sunday, after a decade-long battle over his extradition.

After years of taking legal action against Abu Qatada, Britain finally launched extradition proceedings against the cleric in 2005.

In May, Qatada accepted to return to Jordan voluntarily after the countrys government ratified the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters with Britain, ensuring a fair trial for him.

Although Jordan's information ministry had promised a transparent handling of the case, reporters were not allowed in the court on Sunday.

The cleric was sentenced to life and a 15-year jail term in 1999 and 2000 respectively, for planning to carry out terrorist attacks in Jordan.
