Heavily armed gunmen have attacked a paramilitary police checkpoint in northwest Pakistan, killing six policemen and injuring seven others.
The incident took place on Wednesday about 25 kilometers southeast of the city of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

Siraj Ali, an official at the regional headquarters of the Frontier Constabulary in Peshawar, said a number of attackers were killed in the clash between the gunmen and the police.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack although similar incidents are usually blamed on Taliban militants.

In another incident on Wednesday, seventeen people were killed in a recent US assassination drone strike targeting a shopping center in Miran Shah in Pakistans North Waziristan.

On Monday, armed gunmen ambushed a police checkpoint in Peshawar, killing at least two policemen and injuring several others. Local officials say the security personnel were killed after three gunmen riding two motorbikes attacked the checkpoint.

Peshawar has experienced a fresh spate of violence and militancy over the past few months. Militant attacks and bomb explosions have killed hundreds of people in Peshawar so far this year.

Thousands of Pakistani people have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when the country entered an alliance with the US on the so-called war against terrorism, according to local media.

Thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
