A jetliner operated by the private Iranian airline Mahan Air has made successful emergency landing in southeastern Iran after facing a technical problem and losing an engine.
Kerman province Airports Director General Mohammad Nakhaei said that the aircraft, with 70 passengers onboard, touched down at Sirjan Airport at around 1.30 p.m. local time (0930 GMT) on Sunday, after which all passengers and crew members were safely disembarked.

He addedthat Mahan Air flight was en route from the city of Sirjan -- situated 1,099 kilometers (683 miles) south of Tehran -- to Tehrans Mehrabad Airport at 13:30 on Sunday afternoon when it reported the engine problem to airport authorities, who identified the aircraft as a British Aerospace 146.

He noted that emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, were on hand for the landing.

Nakhaei stated that Mahan Air dispatched another plane a few hours later to pick up the passengers.

The British Aerospace 146 (also BAe 146) is a regional airliner that was produced by British Aerospace between 1983 and 2002 in the United Kingdom.

It has four turbofan engines mounted on pylons underneath the wings, and has retractable tricycle landing gear.

The aircraft has very quiet operation, and has been marketed under the name Whisperjet. It primarily serves as a regional jet, short-haul airliner, or regional airliner.
