Iranians prepare for city and village council elections

The Iranian people will go to the polls for the city and village council elections, which will be held with the countrys 11th presidential election on June 14,Press TVreports.
On Friday, the city and village council candidates began campaigning for the biggest elections ever in Iran in terms of the number of seats.

The fourth round of the elections was originally supposed to be held in June 2010, but it was postponed based on a decision by the Iranian Majlis (parliament).

Over 200,000 candidates have been qualified by a parliamentary committee to run for the local elections.

The Iranians prepare to cast their ballots in the elections.

Voting is very important to me. It is my duty to vote. I am still thinking and researching to see who to vote for in the coming city and village council elections. We must all vote, and elect the best person to have a better and more beautiful city, said an Iranian senior citizen.

We expect the candidates to work hard and keep (their) promises and to work for the people, said a young citizen.

The city and village Islamic councils are local establishments that are elected by public vote in all cities and villages across the country. Council members in each city or village are elected for a four-year term.

The councils are tasked with helping the Islamic Republics social, economic, cultural and educational advancement by encouraging public participation.
