India says it is keen to forge closer cooperation with the Islamic Republic and make investments in Chabahar Free Trade-Industrial Zone in southeast of Iran.
Chabahar Free Zone enjoys special potentialities, and therefore, the existence of transparent regulations there would lead to closer cooperation between the two sides, said Indian Shipping Secretary Shri P. K. Sinha during a visit to Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar on Tuesday

He described Chabahar as the safest and closest, and hence an economical transit route to Central Asia, expressing confidence that the development of Chabahar Port could contribute to the economic growth in the region.

He further said that India would cooperate, as needed, in that regard.

Managing Director of Chabahar Free Zone Mostafa Malekzadeh, for his part, said Chabahar is the most economical transit conduit linking India, Afghanistan and Central Asian states.

Trilateral memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between Iran, India and Afghanistan can facilitate Indias access to Afghanistan and Central Asia, said the Iranian official.

Iran's Chabahar Port - located 72 kilometers (44 miles) west of Pakistan's Gwadar port - holds immense strategic and economic significance for India.

The port is already connected to the city of Zaranj in Afghanistan's southwestern province of Nimruz and can serve as India's entry point to Afghanistan, Central Asia and beyond.

India, Iran and Afghanistan have signed an agreement to give Indian goods, heading for Central Asia and Afghanistan, preferential treatment and tariff reductions at Chabahar.
