Regional states must maintain security: Iranian official

Secretary of Irans Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei says regional countries should cooperate to maintain security and bring peace to the region.
Rezaei said on Monday that regional countries could move toward establishing constructive interaction by forming a regional security council.

The Iranian official also urged copoperation to keep foreign forces out of the region.

Rezaei said it was unfortunate that the situation in countries such as Pakistan, Syria, Bahrain, Palestine and Iraq had created insecurity in the region.

According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), more than 700 people died and over 1,600 others were wounded in terrorist acts throughout Iraq only in April.

In Bahrain, people have been holding demonstrations against the Al Khalifa regime since February 2011. Manama has resorted to a brutal crackdown on the protests.

Turmoil has also gripped Syria for over two years, and many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the foreign-sponsored militancy.

The secretary of the Iranian Expediency Council stated that security, peace and development were three major issues in the region.

Rezaei added that regional countries could establish a geopolitical region, in which they could form joint markets with extra-regional states in different fields such as energy and economy.
