Amano’s remarks about inspection of Bushehr plant illogical: Iranian MP

An Iranian MP says a recent statement by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano to send experts to check the safety of Bushehr nuclear power plant is political and illogical.
Hossein Naqavi Hosseini, the spokesman for the Majlis (Iranian Parliament) Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, said in an interview with the Islamic Consultative Assembly News Agency (ICANA) on Monday that there was no need for any inspection as engineering calculations of Iranian power plants are accessible without travelling to Iran.

On Saturday, Amano was quoted as telling the Bahrain News Agency in Manama that "it is better to send experts to check on the safety of Iran's Bushehr reactor."

On April 9, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale rocked the town of Kaki, some 90 kilometers southeast of Bushehr.

The Iranian MP also stated that if the reason for the inspection is the effects of the earthquake, the Islamic Republic could release a report, and there is no need for a visit.

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran rejects the allegations, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the IAEA, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

In addition, the IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities but has never found any evidence showing that Iran’s civilian nuclear program has been diverted to nuclear weapons production.
