Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has condemned a land swap proposal put forward by an Arab League committee on Palestine.Mehmanparast on Saturday dismissed the plan as a follow-up to the previous schemes to continue the US-led Zionist occupation of Palestinian lands.
The issue of Palestine will not be settled until the occupation of the Palestinian territories completely comes to an end, the Palestinian nation is given the right to self-determination, all [Palestinian] refugees return to their homeland, and a Palestinian unity government is formed with holy al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital, the Foreign Ministry spokesman underscored.
Last Monday, the Arab League and the US discussed a modified 2002 Arab initiative regarding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The Arab League delegation, comprised of the foreign ministers of Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, and Qatar as well as officials from Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, the Palestinian Authority and the Arab League, held a meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry to discuss the matter.
According to the original 2002 Arab initiative, Arab states would have diplomatic ties with the Israeli regime in exchange for a "complete [Israeli] withdrawal" from the territories occupied since the 1967 war. It also called for the return of Palestinian refugees to their homeland.
Last Wednesday, Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani also dismissed the Arab Leagues move as political mischief.
This issue is more of mischief, and its because of the pressures exerted on Israel, and they want to gain some political leeway, Larijani said.
They are trying to break Israel out of isolation one way or another, the Iranian Majlis speaker underlined.
