Iranian ex-president likely participate in presidential elections

Iranian ex-president Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has said he will participate in the upcoming presidential elections if he feels he can save the country.
Everyone who has prestige and capability should come, he added, according to his personal website.

People seek a change in the method of running the country, not just changing a person, he noted.

Iranian Intelligence Minister Heidar Moslehi has recently issued a warning to a reformist leader in Iran, without directly mentioning the name.

"A person who was one of the heads of 'sedition' during the 2009 presidential elections in Iran, should not misunderstand the fact that he has not been punished like the reformist leaders who were placed under house arrests," he said.

Moslehi did not mention anybody's name directly, but during the last several days negative position of authorities against ex-presidents Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Mohammad Khatami has grown.

It has been announced that Iran will hold the 11th presidential election on June 14, 2013.

The voters will select the successor of the current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is not able to participate in the elections for the third term according to the country's constitutional laws.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election and the Guardian Council vets the candidates for qualifications.
