US-Arab League deal political mischief: Iran's Majlis speaker

Irans Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani describes as political mischief the recent agreement between the Arab League and the US over a modified 2002 Arab initiative regarding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
This issue is more of mischief, and its because of the pressures exerted on Israel, and they want to gain some political leeway, Larijiani said in a press conference with his visiting Syrian counterpart, Mohammed Jihad al-Laham, in Tehran on Tuesday.
They are trying to break Israel out of isolation one way or another, the Iranian Majlis speaker said.
Larijani added that many such plans have been proposed over the past few decades, but they are soon forgotten after making a brief splash.

On Monday, an Arab League delegation comprised of the foreign ministers of Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan and Qatar as well as officials from Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, the Palestinian Authority and the Arab League held a meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry to discuss the 2002 Arab initiative regarding the Israeli-Palestinian issue.

According to the original 2002 Arab initiative, Arab states would have diplomatic ties with the Israeli regime in exchange for a "complete [Israeli] withdrawal" from the territories occupied since the 1967 war. It also called for the return of Palestinian refugees to their homeland.

Commenting on the ongoing crisis in Syria, Larijani said, It is unfortunate that the US and some Western countries constantly claim that they are fighting terrorists, but they provide the Syrian opposition and terrorists with money and arms.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that large numbers of the militants are foreign nationals.

Al-Laham, for his part, said Syria is still committed to the proposal made by President Bashar al-Assad, which is designed to find a solution to the crisis in Syria through diplomacy and dialog.
