Irans delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has called on the 30-nation union to contribute to a peaceful solution to the ongoing crisis in Syria.The Iranian delegation has submitted a proposal to the IPU, currently holding its 128th conference in Quito, in view of putting an end to terrorist operations in Syria.
The Syrian issue should still be taken into account by parliaments as an important world issue, and the IPU should support a peaceful resolution to the crisis in the country without bloodshed, Moayed Hosseini Sadr, head of Irans delegation, said on Wednesday.
Meqdad Najafnejad, an Iranian delegate, called for dialogue with the opposition and a ban on arms supply to terrorist groups in order to resolve the Syrian crisis.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the insurgents are foreign nationals.
Several international human rights organizations have accused foreign-sponsored militants of committing war crimes.
