Egypt calls for Irans help to end crisis in Syria

Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Amr has called for Irans assistance in finding a diplomatic solution to the ongoing crisis in Syria.
Amr made the remarks during a Sunday meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
It is necessary to cooperate with Iran and for Tehran to take part in the accomplishment of the diplomatic solution of the conflict in Syria and the end of the bloodshed in this country to provide a democratic future for the Syrian people and the unity of Syria, Russian news agency RIA Novosti quoted Amr as saying.
The Egyptian top diplomat also warned that the ongoing conflict in Syria would deteriorate the regional situation.

This is why it is in the interests of all regional powers to put an end to the tragedy in Syria as soon as possible, Amr added.

In a press statement after the meeting, Amir-Abdollahian stressed that Tehran and Cairo have the same position and we all believe that the only solution for the Syrian crisis is a political one."

"We welcome all ideas revolving around a political solution," he added.

The Iranian diplomat, who arrived in Cairo on Saturday, held talks on the situation in Syria with UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi and Arab League (AL) Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting in the country are foreign nationals.

The Syrian government says the West and its regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are supporting the armed groups.
