President Ahmadinejad to attend Nowruz festival in Turkmenistan
Irans President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is due to visit Turkmenistan to participate in the International Nowruz Festival.
Ahmadinejad will visit Turkmenistan on Thursday to attend the festival in the countrys capital, Ashgabat.

Other regional heads of state including Pakistani and Afghan Presidents, Asif Ali Zardari and Hamid Karzai, respectively, will also attend the Thursday ceremony.

The Iranian president is scheduled to hold talks with heads of state during his two-day visit.

Last year, the International Nowruz Festival was hosted by Tajikistan.

Nowruz (new day), which falls on March 21 this year, is the first day of Farvardin, the first month on the Persian calendar.

In Iran and many other countries people welcome spring with the ancient Nowruz celebrations. Nowruz coincides with the astronomical Vernal Equinox Day or the first day of spring.

The International Day of Nowruz was registered on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on February 23, 2010, and the festivities are now celebrated in many countries as far as the US and Canada.
