Iran parliamentary delegation to attend IPU Assembly in Ecuador

An Iranian parliamentary delegation is scheduled to attend the 128th assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in the Ecuadorian capital Quito.
Lawmakers from 120 countries will participate in the Assembly which is slated to be convened in Quito on March 22-27.

The participants will hold general debates on the political, economic and social situation in the world.

Enforcing the parliaments responsibility to protect and safeguard civilians' lives, fair trade and innovative financing mechanisms for sustainable development, and the use of media, including social media, to enhance citizens' engagement and democracy are among main topics on the meetings agenda.

The Quito meeting will also discuss issues pertaining to prevention and response to violence against women and girls.

Established in 1889, the Inter-Parliamentary Union works in close contact with the UN for promotion of peace and cooperation among states and establishment of democracy.

It expresses views on international issues in order to bring about action by parliaments and parliamentarians, and seeks to foster contacts, coordination, and exchange of experiences among parliaments of all countries.

The national parliaments of 162 countries are members of the IPU, and 10 regional parliamentary assemblies are associate members.

The 127th meeting of the IPU was held in Quebec, Canada, from October 21 to 26, 2012.
