Iran set to become worlds top producer of urea fertilizer: Official

An Iranian deputy oil minister says the countrys capacity for producing urea fertilizer will double within the next two years, making Iran the worlds biggest producer of this petrochemical product.
On Monday, Abdolhossein Bayat put at 4.5 million tons (mt) a year the rated capacity of Irans urea fertilizer output.

He said a petrochemical plant, which would come on-stream near the southern city of Shiraz, would raise the countrys urea fertilizer output to more than 5.5 mt a year.

Bayat, who is also managing director of National Petrochemical Company (NPC), stated that between 7.5 and 8 mt would be added to the countrys urea fertilizer production by 2015.

Iran has significantly expanded the range and volume of its petrochemical products over the past few years, and NPC has become the second largest producer and exporter of petrochemicals in the Middle East after Saudi Arabia.

During the last Persian calendar year (ended March 19, 2012), Iran earned USD1.45 billion from urea fertilizer exports to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, Syria, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mexico, Mozambique and India.

The Islamic Republic exported a total of 18.2 million tons of petrochemical and polymer products, worth about USD14.2 billion, to more than 60 countries in the previous Iranian calendar year.
