Iranian officials in rare criticism of British embassy storming

British-embassy-in-Tehran-007Tehran (dpa) - In a rare move, the spokesman of Irans Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) on Sunday criticized the November 2011 storming by Islamists of the British embassy in Tehran.
"We should not fall into the trap of US and Zionist plots against Iran by doing emotional and superficial acts like the storming of the British embassy in Tehran," General Ramadhan Sharif was quoted by the ISNA news agency as saying.

"We should show a wiser and more careful approach when it comes to long-term strategic plots by the enemies against us," the IRGC public relation head added.

His comments were the first public criticism by Iranian officials of the incident.

The Iranian government at the time tried to distance itself from the 2011 attack, blaming students. London responded by closing down the Iranian embassy and expelling all Iranian diplomats from Britain.

The storming of the embassy, as well as the attacks on the residential complex where a British school was also located, led to a diplomatic crisis with several European Union states and Canada, which in September severed ties with Iran.
