Iran sees 100-fold increase in wheat imports

iran-wheatIran has had a 100-fold increase in wheat imports in the first 9 months of the current Iranian year, Pana news agency reported.
Majid-Reza Hariri, deputy head of the Iran-China Chamber of Commerce said that compared to previous year (2011), Iran has increased its wheat imports significantly.

"In the first nine months of 2011, Iran imported 52,000 tons of wheat worth $15 million, while in the first nine months of 2012, Iran imported 5 million tons worth 1.8 billion," he said.

Iran's State Commerce Organization's Managing Director Abbas Qobadi said in December 2012, that Iran has the capacity to attain self-sufficiency in wheat production.

According to the latest FAO report, "Crop Prospects and Food Situation," Iran's wheat production has reached 13.8 million tons in 2012.

The report added that Iran's wheat production in 2011 was 13.5 million tons and the country ranked at 13th place of world's largest wheat producers.

Hariri added that while overall country's imports declined by some 8 percent, the imports of essential goods increased.

During the course of 9 months of the current Iranian calendar year, Iran conducted a trade of non-oil goods with other countries, worth some $71.2 billion, the Fars News Agency quoted Iranian Customs Administration Director Abbas Memarnejad in December 2012.
