‘Iran willing to cooperate with KMC in various fields’

Pakistan and Iran FlagIran has expressed interest in forging cooperation with the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) for solid waste management, dairy products, slaughtering animals and the energy sector in Karachi.
In a meeting with KMC Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed at his office on Saturday, Consul General of Iran Mehdi Sobhani assured full cooperation in implementation of bus rapid transit in the metropolitan.

Commercial Consul Sattar Sultan Shahi accompanied Sobhani, whereas Transport & Communication Senior Director Muhammad Ather, Foreign Affairs in-charge Ateeq Baig, Media Management Director Ali Hassan Sajid and other officers were also present on the occasion.

The administrator said Karachi was an international city and offered a lot of opportunities for being employed in various sectors.

He said joint projects could be initiated with the cooperation of Iran for mass transit, solid waste management, bus rapid transit, slaughtering animals and improvement of infrastructure.

Rapid development is required in the metropolitan because of its ever-increasing population and the resultant needs of the city, he added.

He said he would like to offer Iranian investors and business community to visit Karachi so that more opportunities for mutual trade and joint investment could be created and trade volume between the two neighbours could be increased.

He expressed hope that Pak-Iran friendship would further strengthen with cooperation in commercial and industrial sectors. He informed the consul general about the visit of Seyed Mohammad Pezhman, mayor of the Iranian city Mashhad, to Karachi last year.

During the visit, various agreements for mutual cooperation had been signed, including the declaration of Mashhad and Karachi as sister cities.

The administrator said Karachi generated over 10,000 tonnes of garbage daily, and between 8,000 and 10,000 people worked for its removal and sifted through it for recycling.

Garbage is being collected on town and cantonment board level, and then shifted to three designated landfill sites of the KMC, he added.

He said the intercity bus system in the metropolitan had proven successful, but the lack of public transport had caused immense trouble for the citizens. The consul general said he would persuade Iranian investors to invest in Karachi’s projects.
