Iran Navy to test-fire Ra’d surface-to-air missile: Iran cmdr.

Ra’d surface-to-air missileA senior Iranian commander says Iran Navy is planning to test-fire its latest indigenous surface-to-air missile in the coming days.
The new Ra’d (Thunder) missile can strike medium-range aerial targets and will be test-fired during the Iranian Navy’sVelayat 91 drills which were launched earlier on Friday, Rear Admiral Amir Rastegar said.
Iran Navy successfully test-fired its first indigenous medium-range anti-radar missile, Mehrab (Altar), during the massive 10-day Velayat 90 naval exercises in December 2011.
Mehrab was successfully fired towards its intended target and accurately completed its pre-determined mission.

Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said Friday that the Velayat 91 naval drill will be carried out in the Strait of Hormuz, the Sea of Oman, north of the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Aden and Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.

“Among the goals of the drill is to display the capabilities of Iran’s Armed Forces and the Navy to defend our country’s maritime borders and interests in line with establishing lasting regional security and conveying the message of peace and friendship to neighboring states,” he added.

In the first day of the drill, a fleet of surface and subsurface vessels were sent to the location of the exercise.

The fleet included different classes of heavy and light submarines, logistic and missile-launching warships and frigates as well as Alborz and Sabalan destroyers.

The Jamaran destroyer closely monitored the movements of the mock enemy and sent collected information to the command center. Submarines, surface vessels and hovercrafts were then dispatched to the location of the battle to counter mock enemy forces.

Over the past few years, Iran has held several military drills to enhance the defensive capabilities of its armed forces and to test modern military tactics and equipment.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly assured other nations, especially neighbors, that its military might poses no threat to other countries, insisting that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.
