Sanctions against Iran "detrimental" to EU states: Iranian spokesman
By Xinhua

TEHRAN, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said that the European Union (EU), by imposing unilateral sanctions against the Islamic republic, is moving in the wrong direction because the sanctions will finally prove " detrimental" to EU countries, Tehran Times daily reported on Sunday.

Mehmanparast said Saturday that the EU polices toward Tehran are "unreasonable," "unfair" and finally will act against the interests of EU countries, according to the report.

Commenting on "unemployment crises and economic slowdown" in Europe, Mehmanparast said in such a situation the EU should utilize its potential to promote ties with other states.

The Islamic republic as a regional power has a great potential to cooperate with other countries including European members, he added.

On Oct. 15, the EU decided to enforce fresh sanctions against Iran, including a ban on the import of natural gas from Iran to the EU. It also agreed to broaden the existing export ban on key equipment and entities for the Iranian oil, gas and petrochemical industries.

The EU imposed an embargo on Iran's oil export on July 1.

The West has been accusing Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under civilian disguise, a charge that has always been denied by Tehran.
