Iran MPs: Temporary marriage registration not mandatory

Rejecting a proposal to register temporary marriages, Iran's members of Parliament said that the registration of temporarymarriage is not mandatory except in some cases.



At Monday public meeting, Sattar Hedayat Khah, the representative for Boyer-Ahmadand and the Spokesman of the Majlis Legal and Judicial Commission, proposed the registration of temporary marriage to prevent the misuse and the potential harm they could cause women,Fars News Agencysaid.

According towomenrc, speaking in opposition to the Hedayat Khah proposal, Mohammad Dehghan, the representative for Torghabeh and the member of Majlis Legal and Judicial Commission said requiringindividualstoregister the temporarymarriageiscontrary to people's personalrelationship issues and if someone does not practice the law, he cannot be protested.

Dehghan mentioned that in theJusticeCommissionAct, temporary marriages be registered under three circumstances: if the woman became pregnant, if the parties wanted to register the marriage and if registration was a stipulation of the marriage. He stressed that theJusticeCommissionAct is suitable and there is no need to go further.

Finally, calling the amendment an intrusion into Iranian's private family affairs, MPs passed the Article 22 of theFamily Protection Bill,FNAreported.

According to FNA, MPsstipulatedinArticle 22 that Iran'slegal systemsupport the permanent marriagein order to strengthenthe family systemand temporarymarriageis required to register if the woman became pregnant, if the parties wanted to register the marriage and if registration was a stipulation of the marriage.

Thereby, there is no need to register temporary marriage except in three cases.

Therefore, it can be said that Iran recognized men and women relationship without registration.So, the criterion for a relationship to be legal is man and woman's statements, and no one can be asked about his or her relationships.

Moreover, legal activists say that this would let men to make informal relationships apart from marriage.
