Iran supports referendum on a new constitution in Syria

Iran supports referendum on a new constitution in Syria
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus blames outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

Iran's Ambassador to Damascus Mohammad Reza Raouf Sheibani says the only way out of the crisis in Syria is dialogue and consultations among all parties concerned.

He added that Tehran supports the reforms pledged by President Bashar al-Assad, including a referendum on a new constitution that would allow a multi-party political system. The Iranian envoy stressed that Tehran backs the creation of an environment that would be most conducive to dialogue inside Syria, so that the Syrian people could find the best solution on themselves with input from all sides of their society.

He blamed the United States for inciting unrest in Syria, saying that certain Western and Arab statesregrettablyfollow the US footsteps in this regard.

The main purpose of US measures against Syria is to weaken the anti-Israel resistance front in the Arab nation, Sheibani said.

He stated that Irans foothold in Syria has enabled Tehran to pursue its reckless regional policies, and to stop those policies, Irans presence in Syria must be ended.

Leaked documents suggest Iran has agreed to help Syria get around international sanctions imposed against the country for killing civilians.

This document lists ways Iran would help Syria, which is undergoing an economic crisis due to sanctions imposed by the Arab League, the United States, Turkey and the European Union. The European Union has imposed an oil embargo on Syria.

Iran's First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi has lashed out at the rulers of several Arab countries for adopting hostile stances toward Syria and aiming to harm the Middle Eastern country.

Iran also called on India to give more attention to realities of the present in Syria after New Delhi backed an Arab League draft resolution at the UN Security Council.
