Tehran, April 19, IRNA - A regional information management center for natural disasters will be established in Tehran, said Iran’s vice-president for planning and strategic supervision.
In an interview with IRNA in New Delhi, India, Hamid Pourmohammadi added that the proposal of establishing the center has been approved by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).
The center will be establised to reduce the effects of natural disasters in the region and handle their consequences, Pourmohammadi noted

The official added that organizations, involved in confronting natural disasters, including the Presidential Office’s Department for Planning and Strategic Supervision, National Disaster Management Organization and National Geographic Organization, are members of the center.

Pourmohammadi added that the center will help ESCAP’s member countries and organizations to share experiences and capabilities in the field of overcoming natural disasters.

“The Capacity Development Group for Managing Information and Confronting Natural Disasters in South and Southwest Asia was formed two years ago on Iran’s proposal. The group’s first meeting was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan,” he said.

Pourmohammadi added that participants of the second meeting held in New Deli on Wednesday discussed ways of dealing with natural disasters and establishing regional information management center in Tehran.

Iran, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Turkey are members of the group.

The third meeting of the group will be held in Thailand.
