Action needed for Iran gas consumption

21 Dec 2013 - 9:54

TEHRAN (FNA)- Director of the Research Institute of the Petroleum Industry Hamid Reza Katouzian warned against excessive gas consumption in the country, saying quick action is needed to reconsider energy consumption models.

Katouzian said Iran’s gas consumption will reach 2.5 bcm/d in 2025 if the current trend continues.

“At present, Iran’s gas consumption equals the total gas consumption in Europe’s industry,” he said.

Katouzian, a former lawmaker, said the previous administration neglected pieces of legislation for efficient energy use.

He said energy carrier prices are unrealistic in Iran, adding that foreign exchange rate fluctuations have killed any efforts to revise the prices of energy carriers.

Katouzian said new technologies must be applied in curbing energy consumption, adding that thermal energy recovery and development of mixed fuel power plants would be of help in energy saving.
