UNESCO urged to focus on Iranian cultural heritage

8 Dec 2013 - 17:28

Zistboom: The three main duties of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO) are clear and cultural heritage issues top the list, which UNESCO can pursue seriously.
ICHHTO Chief Mohammad Ali Najafi made the above statement in a meeting with Hiranand Purkait, the head of UNESCO’s Tehran office.

He added that handicrafts and traditional arts, as the second field of activities supervised by ICHHTO, pursue the objectives of UNESCO as well, Fars News Agency reported.

Najafi said tourism is a socio-cultural phenomenon directly linked with UNESCO.

Criticizing the destruction of Persian-inscribed tiles at Nezami Ganjavi’s Mausoleum in the city of Ganja, Azerbaijan Republic, and the Azeri government’s attempts to register polo in its name, the official said ICHHTO has written two letters to UNESCO’s director general but there has been no response so far.

Najafi said President Hassan Rouhani and the current Iranian government attach special importance to cultural diplomacy and this is a suitable opportunity that can be used by UNESCO.

UNESCO’s Cluster Office, covering four regional countries, namely Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkmenistan, is located in Tehran. Najafi hoped the office will pursue cultural heritage issues related to Iran more seriously.

Purkait noted that as a large country with an old civilization and history, Iran has superiority over many others in the region in various fields. He promised to pursue important cultural issues of Iran through UNESCO’s Tehran office.
