Iran to counter sanctions through active diplomacy: Foreign Minister

8 Sep 2013 - 14:42

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says the Islamic Republic will employ “active diplomacy” to “solve the problem” of the illegal and cruel sanctions imposed against it.
In a meeting with Masahiko Komura, the special envoy of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Iran on Saturday, Zarif said the Iranian nation will never give up their rights.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies falsely claim that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with the US and the European Union using the unfounded allegation as a pretext to impose illegal sanctions on Iran.

Tehran strongly rejects the claim, maintaining that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Describing Japan as a “natural partner” of the Islamic Republic, Zarif expressed hope that the two countries could use their capacities to expand relations.

Referring to great opportunities for increasing bilateral ties, the Iranian foreign minister stressed Tehran's resolve to expand trade and economic cooperation with Tokyo.

The two officials also discussed regional and international issues, particularly recent developments with regards to Syria.

Prior to his visit to Iran, the Japanese official told local media that he would urge Iran, as an influential country, to play a role in resolving the deadly conflict gripping Syria.
