Acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas has urged Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and Syria to maintain a neutral position regarding the conflicts in the two countries, Press TV reports.
“We do not wish to interfere in their internal affairs. This is also a recommendation to the refugees. We hope our people in Syria and Lebanon are shunned from any of the repercussions of any conflict that might flare up here or there,” the Palestinian Authority chief said on Wednesday.

Abbas also called on Palestinian refugees to “disassociate” themselves from the unrest in the noted countries and to abide by the Lebanese cabinet’s decision regarding the possession of arms at refugee camps.
“When it comes to arms inside the camps, the decision is that of the Lebanese president and government. We as guests in this country comply with their decisions, as we are watchful for Lebanon’s security and unity,” Abbas said.
The remarks were made at a joint press conference by Abbas and Lebanese President Michel Sleiman.

The Ain al-Hilwech camp, located near Sidon, is Lebanon’s largest Palestinian camp, housing more than 45,000 people.

Last month, a hand grenade explosion at the camp’s Mansheyyeh neighborhood left a number of people, including women and children, injured.

Under an agreement between the two sides, the Lebanese army does not enter the premises of the camp and leaves the security of the area to the Palestinians.
