EU to hinder US anti-Iran sanctions: MPs

17 Jun 2017 - 14:50

June 17, The Iran Project – Because of Iran’s influence in the region, Europeans will put pressure on the United States to prevent it from issuing new sanctions against the Islamic Republic, says a member of Iran's parliament.

Speaking to a reporter on Saturday, Jalil Rahimi Jahan Abadi stated that due to the fact that investment in Iran and the country’s pivotal role in the Middle East are of great significance to the Europeans, they will certainly try to convince the US Senate not to issue new anti-Iran sanctions.

By the JCPOA, Iran aimed at removing international sanctions imposed by westerners on  the country, Rahimi Jahan Abadi said, adding but the US is continuously imposing new sanctions under the pretext of supporting terrorism, missile programs, and human rights violations.

The Iranian lawmaker went on to say that so the Islamic Republic should now negotiate with other P5+1 members.

Now that European countries, being aware of the US failure to fulfill JCPOA obligations, are ready to align with Iran against America’s new sanctions, we should quickly use this great opportunity, Valiollah Nanvakenari, another Iranian parliamentarian also noted.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif recently sent a letter to EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini in reaction to the West’s default on the nuclear deal between Tehran and the P5+1 group.

And, the European Union (EU)’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, said scrapping a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran would be in the interest of no one, stressing that the 28-member EU’s will resolve to preserve the nuclear accord.

Earlier on Thursday, the US Senate voted nearly unanimously to impose new sanctions against Iran and Russia.

The sanctions come following two sets of sanctions imposed in February and May by the US Treasury Department over Iran’s missile program.
