TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran sent a major humanitarian aid cargo to the flood-stricken people in Balkh province in Northern Afghanistan.
The cargo was distributed on Sunday among the people affected by a devastating flood last week. It included 10 tons of rice, 3 tons of cooking oil, 1,000 blankets and 500 kilograms of dry tea.

Iran's Consul-General in Balkh Seyed Ali Asqar Arablou said that a bigger humanitarian aid cargo will soon be distributed among the people in the province.

The death toll of last week's flood in Balkh province has exceeded 20,000. More than 15,000 people have become homeless. Hundreds of hectares of agricultural lands have been ruined and more than 4,000 houses have been destroyed.

Iran is one of the most important donors to Afghanistan which has kept its promises to help to the reconstruction of the war-hit country.

Iran has built some roads, power transmission lines, and border stations, among the other infrastructure projects which would better link the two nations.

Iran has also contributed more than $50 million annually to Afghan anti-narcotics efforts in the last 8 years.
