7 May 2017 - 22:24

IRNA – Iran and Afghanistan agreed on Sunday to set up five committees in the future to discuss preparing a final document for cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

The agreement was agreed upon during a meeting in Kabul between visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

Zarif and the Afghan president underlined the need for the expansion of relations between Tehran and Kabul in all areas.

Noting that terrorism and extremism are common threats for both countries, the two officials stressed the necessity of collective efforts of all regional countries to fight these phenomena.

During his short stay in Kabul, the foreign minister also met with other top-ranking Afghan officials, including Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani, National Security Adviser Mohammad Hanif Atmar and former president Hamid Karzai.

In a press conference after the meeting, the Iranian and Afghan foreign ministers said their talks focused on fighting drug trafficking, economic cooperation, transit routes, the issue of immigrants and joint fight against terrorism without dividing it into good and bad terrorism.

Zarif left the Afghan capital for Tehran on Sunday afternoon at the end of a one-day visit to the country.
