6 May 2017 - 13:30

IRNA – Syrian Ambassador to Austria Bassam Sabbagh called for continuation of cooperation with Iran to bring peace to Syria and preserve the country's territorial integrity.

Speaking to IRNA here on Friday, Sabbagh appreciated the positive role Iran played in the Astana talks on Syria, the latest round of which was held in the Kazakh capital on May 3-4.

Speaking on the sidelines of a photo exhibition on Syria’s developments, the Syrian ambassador said that Tehran and Moscow are the powerful friends and allies of Damascus, and they play positive roles in the Syrian events.

Sabbagh went on to say that his country will continue its close cooperation with those two countries.

Elaborating on the Syria peace talks, Sabbagh said the aim of Syria’s presence in the negotiations is to bring about peace and tranquility to the country and preserve national unity.

At the end of the recent Syria peace talks in Astana, the participating delegations from Iran, Russia and Turkey as the three truce guarantors in Syria as well as the UN and US representatives and the Jordanian and Kazakh envoys agreed to create four de-escalation zones in Syria to relive tension in that country.

The participating delegates also agreed to start holding talks on implementation of the de-escalation plan on May 6.
