Zarif calls for expansion of cooperation with Georgia

IRNA – Visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Iran could play a pivotal role in preserving the Georgia infrastructures.

Zarif made the remarks in Iran-Georgia economic meeting attended by Georgia's Economy Minister Giorgi Gakharia.

During the meeting the avenues for expanding mutual cooperation were discussed.

Touching upon the two countries historical relations, Zarif said following the independence of Georgia after the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991, Iran was among the first countries that recognized Georgia.

Pointing to the expansion of Iran-Georgia relations in economic arenas, Zarif said the two countries could become a corridor for connecting the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea.

He also voiced Iran’s willingness to cooperate with Georgia in agricultural arenas.

Zarif said the Prime Minster of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashviliis is supposed to take a trip to Iran within days.

Zarif is on a tour to three Central Asian and Caucasian countries. The trip takes place on the eve of the 25th independence anniversary of these countries and 25 years after Iran’s diplomatic ties with them.
