Official reaffirms Iran’s backing for Syria

13 Oct 2016 - 22:22

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An adviser to Iran’s parliament speaker reiterated Tehran’s unwavering support for Syria in the fight against terrorism.

“We will keep supporting Syria within the axis of resistance strongly and with a loud voice,” former deputy foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said on Wednesday.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.

Amir Abdollahian also denounced the joint US-Saudi military action against Yemen as a “failed act of aggression” and stressed that Iran will keep efforts to ensure security and stability in the region.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been launching deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in Yemen in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

According to UN estimates, over 10,000 Yemenis, including 4,000 women and children, have lost their lives in the military campaign.
