Iran wants Persian Gulf clear of foreign troops: Iran MP

2 Apr 2013 - 21:08

An Iranian lawmaker says the Islamic Republic believes that regional states should take charge of maintaining security in the Persian Gulf with no foreign interference.
“Iran wants to see the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman...clear of any transregional naval forces in the near future,” Ahmad Shohani, a member of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Tuesday.

Shohani expressed concern that some Persian Gulf littoral states are trying to guarantee their security by facilitating the presence of foreign militaries in the strategic waters of the Persian Gulf.
“These countries should know that the presence of foreign forces in the Persian Gulf disturbs security in the region,” the Iranian lawmaker warned.
The legislator further hailed the Iranian naval forces for their active and strong presence in international waters, describing it as another proof of Iran’s capability to strongly respond to enemy plots in international waters.

Shohani reiterated the deterrent and defensive nature of the Islamic Republic’s military capacities that are aimed to counter threats from “colonialist powers.”

“Iran's [naval] presence in international waters is aimed to convey the message of peace and friendship to the world, especially to Muslim nations,” he stated.
