Supreme leader’s permission makes Iran-Russia military cooperation possible: Top MP

3 Sep 2016 - 13:58

September 3, The Iran Project – A senior Iranian Member of Parliament said on Saturday that Iran-Russia’s military cooperation over the Syria crisis was definitely taken place with the permission of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

Stressing that Iran has not committed its military facilities to any country in the world, Masoud Pezeshkian, first deputy speaker of the Majlis said military cooperation between Russia and Iran was impossible without Supreme leader’s permission.

Speaking to a reporter, Pezeshkian pointed out that Majlis presiding board has not held a meeting on Iran-Russia’s military cooperation in Nojeh base since such political and security issues are related to the Supreme National Security Council and the leader.

Iran MPs initially said nothing about Russia's use of Iran’s Nojeh air base near the western city of Hamedan, then Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said Russian fighters are using an Iranian airfield in line with trilateral cooperation and  at the request of the Syrian government, stressing that the issue is not related to the Iranian parliament.

On August 16 Russian bombers began launching strikes on terrorist positions in Syria from Iran’s Nojeh Airbase in the western Hamadan Province.

Iran and Russia have been assisting the Syrian government in its fight against foreign-backed terrorist groups, including the Daesh Takfiri terrorists.
