29 Jun 2016 - 15:04

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi strongly condemned the deadly terrorist attacks and explosions at Istanbul Atatürk Airport, which left dozens of “innocent people” dead and many others injured.

In a statement on Wednesday, Qassemi denounced the terrorist attack on Istanbul’s international airport as an “inhumane crime” and expressed Tehran’s deep condolences to the bereaved families of the victims.

He further said extremism and terrorism has no borders, adding that as Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has said, there is a necessity for “the collective will of the world to fight the inauspicious phenomenon”.

He renewed Iran's preparedness to cooperate with the regional countries to root out the dangerous and inauspicious phenomenon.

The explosions at Istanbul’s international airport left at least 36 people dead and 146 others injured in an attack on Tuesday evening, which officials blamed on the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terror group.

Shortly before the blasts, assailants armed with AK-47 rifles became involved in a firefight with security and police near the airport’s x-ray security checkpoint.

The gunmen then detonated what are believed to have been suicide bombs. Three attackers died on the scene, said the Turkish prime minister, Binali Y?ld?r?m.

Five of the dead were police officers, according to the Turkish national broadcaster TRT, which reported that at least 147 people were injured in the attack.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
