30 Jan 2013 - 21:38

public hanging in Tehran's Artists ParkThe public execution of two men, whose mugging of a man in broad daylight on Tehran’s streets caught on a video and posted on YouTube last month, has been faced with wide reactions.

The two, identified as Alireza Mafiha and Mohammad Ali Sorouri, both aged under 24, were convicted of Moharebeh (waging war against God) and corruption on earth.

The sentence, issued by the Revolutionary Court and confirmed by Iran’s Supreme Court, was carried out publicly in Park-e Honarmandan (Artists Park), near the crime scene.

So, the public hanging in Tehran's Artists Park, which is a cultural place, has been faced with severe reactions among Iranian public, especially cyberspace users.

Most Persian-language users have objected the sentence issued by  the Revolutionary Court, saying that while criminals of minor offenses are immediately condemned to heavy sentences, economic offenders, like perpetrators of embezzlement or son of the former president, get light sentences.
