Tehran, Beijing to build new N. power plants in southern Iran

22 Jul 2015 - 16:56

TEHRAN (ISNA)- Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said Iran and China have agreed to build two new nuclear plants in Makran coastal strip, southern Iran.

“We will build four nuclear power plants simultaneously in the country in the next two-three years. Over 20.000 nuclear engineers will start working in there,” he said.

He also said Iran’s heavy water resources surpass 90 tons because it has been working for several years. “We are obtaining the required heavy water and we do not need the extra amount.”

Salehi continued that the country’s uranium stockpile reaches 7-8 tons about which decisions need to be made based on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPA) over the next 4-5 months.

He moved to the Possible Military Dimensions (PMD) issue, and said “Based on the agreement with Mr. Amano, PMD needs to be settled by December 15.” Iran does not agree with the PMD. “We will settle the issue in a political-technical framework to avoid excuses.”

The Iranian official noted that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei issued a permit for metals exploration and uranium mining. “The permit will speed up the process.”
