President: Youth first victims of deadly drug trade

Tehran, June 27, IRNA – President Hassan Rouhani in a message on the occasion of World Drug Day said the day provides an opportunity for raising awareness and attracting public support against destructive harms of narcotic drugs as well as offering mechanisms in the relentless and overall campaign with such an immense social problem.

The message, read by the Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli at a conference held on the occasion at IRIB International Conference Hall, deplored the fact that the youth who are the productive force and supportive of the future development of the country are among prime victims of this deadly trade.

“Iran, due to its neighborhood with a country which is the main source of the cultivation, production and consequently activities of the criminals and organized and transnational crime, is exposed to the heaviest human harms and destructive outcome of the trafficking of drugs and addiction.”

Currently, the message further added, the Islamic Republic of Iran, by taking advantage of local scientific capacities and attracting maximum participation of NGOs, has comprehensive preventive plans underway for the treatment and reduction of the harm which can set a proper pattern for other countries.

By honoring the memory of more than 3,700 martyrs and 12,000 brave disabled of the country in this grave campaign, and by paying homage to all those who have lost their lives throughout the world in this direction, the president appreciated efforts of those involved in organizing the ceremony.

June 26 is the World Drug Day and on this occasion a week, starting June 27, is observed in Iran as the drug week.
