Armenian speaker: North-South railway to boost trade exchanges between Iran, Armenia

27 Jan 2015 - 17:15

TEHRAN (FNA)- Armenian Parliament Speaker Galust Sahakyan in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Yerevan underscored that the North-South railway can increase trade exchanges between the two countries.
"Building the North-South railway can prove effective in increasing the volume of exchanges," Sahakyan said during the meeting on Wednesday.

The North-South railway route connects the Commonwealth of the Independent States (CIS) countries to the Persian Gulf and the South East Asian nations.

The length of this railway which is built in East of the Caspian Sea is about 908 km of which 120 km is in Kazakhstan, 700 in Turkmenistan and 88 km in Iran.

Sahakyan expressed regret that Iran and Armenia haven’t been able to use all their capacities to further develop ties, he said, "Experts should endeavor to identify the potentials and use these opportunities to further broaden the relations."

He also underlined the necessity for cooperation between different Iranian and Armenian provinces.

Zarif arrived in Yerevan on Monday to confer on the latest developments in the region and explore new ways for the promotion of bilateral relations.

The Iranian foreign minister's two-day visit to the country is taking place at the formal invitation of his Armenian counterpart Edward Nalbandian with whom the Iranian top diplomat held a meeting earlier today.

Zarif and his accompanying delegation, are also scheduled to hold separate meetings with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan.

Iran and Armenia have taken major strides towards widening and deepening of their relations in recent years, particularly in the economic sector.

In October, Abrahamyan, heading a high-ranking delegation, visited Iran to confer with senior officials of the country on ways to develop all-out ties.

Abrahamyan held meetings with a number of high-ranking Iranian officials, including Zarif, during which they exchanged views on the growing trend of the development of bilateral relations in all areas, specially in economic, trade, infrastructures and tourism fields, and underscored the necessity for removing the existing obstacles.

They also called for continued reciprocal visits by Iranian and Armenian officials to consult and exchange views on the bilateral relations and other issues of mutual interest.
