18 Dec 2014 - 23:02

Tehran, Dec 18, IRNA – Minister of Roads and Urban Development said on the basis of planning made with the Oil Ministry the plan for renovation of public road transportation fleet has been prepared and presented to the Economy Council.
Abbas Akhundi put the total value of the country’s roads at 2000 thousand billion rials and said although the cost of roads maintenance is 90 thousand billion rials annually there is no credit available for this job.
He underlined the need for the development of infrastructures for increasing the number of border terminals and connecting Iran’s surface network to international routes. He said: “I am committed to put into operation whatever that has been commissioned to me through consultation with experts and the private sector.”

Terming renovation of public road transportation an essential task, he said roads of the country are tolerating traffic load more than their capacity and growth rate of vehicles is high in the country.

He said currently 17 million vehicles are operating in the country and the number is ever increasing but road facilities are not compatible with this growth.

Meanwhile, Traffic Police Chief Brigadier General Eskandar Momeni referred to the 7.5% drop in traffic accidents in the past year and said no action has been taken with regards to safety vehicles and in certain cases there has been a drawback.

He said in Iran 50% of traffic accident victims lose their lives on the spot and the remaining 50% after the incident, adding that vehicle safety will save passenger lives.
