Tehran demands firm UN reaction to Yemen terrorist attack

4 Dec 2014 - 12:42

New York, Dec 4, IRNA – Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations Hossein Dehqani urged the UN to show firm reaction to the terrorist attack on the Iranian embassy building in Yemen.
In a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon and the Security Council rotating chairman Muhammad Zain Sharif on Wednesday, Dehqani underlined the need to condemn the terrorist attack against the residence of the Iranian ambassador in Sanaa, Yemen.
He also urged the UN to press its member states to stop funding al-Qaeda terrorists.

The Iranian envoy further called for immediate actions by the UN officials to confront the growing wave of terrorist operations.

He reminded the UN officials that it was not the first time terrorists took such actions against Iran's diplomats and embassy buildings in Yemen.

He called on the United Nations Security Council to urge the Yemeni government to punish the elements behind such terrorist acts.

The Iranian envoy also called on the UN member states to join efforts to stop any kind of support to terrorist groups.

Dehqani urged the Yemeni officials to carry out precise and transparent investigations on the Wednesday terrorist attack and punish the culprits behind it.

A car bomb went off outside the residence of Iranian ambassador in Sanaa Wednesday morning killing and injuring a number of people.

All Iranian diplomatic personnel were safe and accounted for, but part of the building was damaged by the explosion.

According to reports, Ambassador Hossein Niknam was not in the place when the blast occurred.

Following the blast, Yemeni charge d'affaires in Tehran was summoned to Foreign Ministry to hear Iran's strong protest against his government over its failure to efficiently protect Iran's diplomatic mission.

Al-Qaeda branch in Yemen has claimed responsibility for the blast. According to news sources, al-Qaeda posted a statement in its twitter page claiming responsibility for the attack.
