World powers hope to resume Iran talks
World powers said Wednesday after talks on Iran's contested nuclear programme that they were ready to resume negotiations with Tehran "as soon as possible." The office of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said after talks between senior officials of the so-called P5+1 nations -- Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States, and Germany -- that the group was "committed to having another round of talks with Iran as soon as possible."
Commander: Iran missile technology sent to Gaza
Iran has supplied Hamas in Gaza with the technology to "quickly" produce longer-range missiles on their own without needing direct shipments, said a report Wednesday that quoted the head of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard. The comments by Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari offer some of the clearest insights on Iran's weapons support for Hamas, whose Iranian-engineered Fajr-5 missiles have struck near Tel Aviv and Jerusalem during weeklong battles with Israel.
Iran's president welcomes Hamas-Israel ceasefire-report
Iran's president welcomed the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel but expressed reservations about its effectiveness, a Pakistani television station, which interviewed him on Thursday, reported. "President (Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad said the cruelty in Gaza should unite Muslims. He said he welcomes the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, but he seems to not be very optimistic about the ceasefire," a TV anchor for the station said.
'Israel failed in its goals', thanks Iran: Meshaal
Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal said on Wednesday that Israel had "failed in all its goals" after a Gaza truce deal came into effect, while thanking Iran for its support during the conflict. "After eight days, God stayed their hand from the people of Gaza, and they were compelled to submit to the conditions of the resistance," Meshaal said.
HK says five Iranian ships deflagged, 14 others likely to go
Hong Kong has deregistered five Iranian cargo ships and a further 14 are likely to follow after their classification society quit Iran due to sanctions imposed by the European Union and the United States over its nuclear programme. Tough sanctions have tightened the screws on Tehran, which relies on its shipping trade for imports including food, consumer and industrial goods.
Fill brought to Iran site IAEA wants to inspect: diplomats
Iran has been hauling dirt to a military site U.N. nuclear inspectors want to visit, Western diplomats said on Wednesday, saying the findings were based on satellite images and they reinforced suspicions of a clean-up. They said the pictures, presented during a closed-door briefing for member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), suggested Iran was continuing to try to hide incriminating traces of any illicit nuclear-related activity.
