The two-day visit of the UN USG Valerie Amos began on Sunday 17 August. Its objectives were to engage with the Government of Iran on pressing humanitarian crises in the region, specifically Syria, Iraq and Gaza. She also aimed to discuss Iran’s capacity to respond to natural disasters in the region through humanitarian assistance.

In her meetings with these high-ranking officials, discussions centred on Iran’s capacities in relief and rescue operations. Ms. Amos called for the continuation of the country’s sustained support in helping the dispatch and delivery of humanitarian aid to the people affected in crises in the region.

On Monday, 18 August, Ms. Amos met Deputy Foreign Minister Araghchi and delivered a key-note speech in commemoration of World Humanitarian Day 2014 which was held at the Iranian Centre for International Conferences at the Foreign Ministry.
