Tehran, July 26, IRNA – President Hassan Rouhani, in a message on Saturday, congratulated new European commission president Jean-Claude Juncker on election to the post.
Juncker has been elected to head the EU executive for the next five years by a comfortable majority of MEPs in the new European parliament.
He won with 422 votes in the 751-seat chamber, 46 more than the absolute majority needed.

In his message, Rouhani said that the vote indicates the confidence of EU governments and nations in the new EC president.

The president expressed hope for further expansion of Iran-EU relations during Juncker?s tenure.

He said Iran is prepared to take the steps needed for promotion of ties with the European Union based on mutual interest and respect.
