US stonewalling moves endanger nuclear talks

30 Jun 2015 - 2:16

TEHRAN (FNA)- When Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei highlights red lines for a nuclear deal with world powers, he is not talking about “his” red lines.

Ayatollah Khamenei is essentially restating Iran’s red lines and this does in no way mean intervention, tension or discord between the government, the parliament and the leadership – as Western media outlets would like to suggest. It doesn’t mean an attempt to derail international diplomacy either.

Under international law, Ayatollah Khamenei is right to demand that “all sanctions” imposed on Iran by the United Nations, the European Union, the United States and Congress be lifted immediately when a final deal is signed. Iran must also be allowed to continue its nuclear Research and Development program.

Despite the West’s smear campaign, the Iranian Leader never suggests he is against diplomacy or that he doesn’t want a deal that is fair and includes simultaneous gives-and-takes of equal weight; and this means flexibility and rationality. What he and the entire Iran stands against is the West's endless demands.

No one in Iran is against diplomacy. Everyone backs the country’s negotiators – including Ayatollah Khamenei – seeking an accord that can lift sanctions, secure the interests and rights of the Iranian people, and benefit the entire world. As far as Iran is concerned, a final deal is within reach if the P5+1 group abides by its commitments and stops making endless demands.

If the US, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China are ready to recognize Iran’s rights and implement their undertakings - remove sanctions, take measures simultaneously with Iran’s actions, and stop making endless demands - it is possible to reach a final deal that benefits all.

The problem is that the US insists on long-term restrictions, unconventional inspections, interrogation of Iranian figures, and inspection of military sites (Iran’s red lines), beyond the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and international rules and regulations.

As maintained by Ayatollah Khamenei, this could only mean one thing: They intend to dismantle Iran’s nuclear industry or turn it into nothing but a “caricature”.

As it stands, the timeframe for and extent of sanctions removal remains a major obstacle in the negotiations, the exact details of which are being kept private while talks are in progress.

This is while the US is raising more demands and evades endorsing fulfillment of the undertakings it accepted under the April 2 Lausanne Agreement. The Americans are bringing up more excuses to avoid lifting the sanctions altogether as enshrined in the Lausanne Agreement and even their own factsheet.

It is unfortunate that the Obama administration has reneged on its undertakings. Washington’s stonewalling moves have prolonged the talks and could even endanger the negotiations. If that happens, the Americans have no one to blame but themselves.
