Iran summons UK envoy over embassy attack

IRNA In the wake of the last night attack on Iran embassy in London, Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the UK envoy to Tehran Nicholas Hopton.

Iran relayed its serious protest over the attack on diplomatic mission in London, Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi said on Saturday.

The director general for Europe affairs of Iran Foreign Ministry also urged London to be committed to its responsibilities in protecting diplomats and diplomatic missions and to increase security measures for Iran embassy.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Hopton expressed regret over the accident, adding that he will inform London and will convey responses soon.

The attackers stormed into the compound of the Iranian Embassy on Friday night, hoisting their flag on the balcony of the building without facing any reaction on the part of the London police.

The group attacking the Iranian Embassy in London represents an extremist Shia community. They have a sectarian interpretation of Shia and insist on insulting the grand Sunni leaders. The UK government, however, has an unwavering commitment to assure the inviolability of the Embassy, Hamid Baeidinejad said earlier in a Twitter message.

In the wake of the recent attack on Iran's diplomatic mission in Britain by a London-based radical cult calling itself Shirazi, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman strongly protested to the UK government.
